A Family Legacy of Light

The Man Who Helped Light the World at Christmas

Long before The Colors of Ricky, another spark was already part of the Eckstein family story.

Richard Gary Eckstein’s grandfather, Reuben Eckstein of New York, was an inventor whose United States patents document his work on miniature electric lamp sockets and decorative lighting systems specifically designed for Christmas-tree outfits and ornamental illumination during the 1920s and 1930.

His inventions belong to the early history of electric Christmas lighting — practical engineering created to make those small lights easier to use, maintain, arrange, and enjoy.

A family of inventors. A century of light. And eventually, a little boy named Ricky.

Historical record: U.S. Patent 1,568,815 • U.S. Patent 1,734,162 • U.S. Patent 1,752,662
